Match Report

Paul Seldon's second century of the season was complimented by Will Smith's first five-fer for nine man Knockers in this 152 run win. Shoreham's tail almost wagged its way to an unlikely draw.

Batting first, the visitors opened with Seldon (112) looking to get back on track as the Knockers' run-getter. Despite losing Guy Howe (9) and Scott Landers (6) early, both bowled, Seldon was in imperious form and posted his second successive ton at Shoreham's ground. Lynden Spencer-Allen (72no) was a steadying partner on a damp wicket and the two of them made it a long afternoon for both the fielding and those that had to search the surrounding undergrowth for six hits.

Seldon eventually fell to a calm catch on the boundary bringing captain Tom Cobb (27no) to the crease. The Cobb and Spencer-Allen partnership brought about the latter's half-century which included a six smashed straight over the sight screen.

The sun came out after tea although it did Shoreham little in the way of favours as the track continued to cut up. The Knockers opened with Smith (17-5) and Nick Williams (12-1). Smith's testing bowling produced three early chances which were all taken by three different sets of hands. Spencer-Allen at second slip made a difficult catch just off of his toes look simple before Howe and then John Mitchell held on at cover point and mid-off respectively. Williams kept up the pressure at the other end which was to produce only two of the ten wickets in this innings.

After Smith clean bowled for his forth wicket, Freddie Young replaced (20-3) him. Young bowled five maidens in a long spell of excellent and varied spin bowling. He took two wickets rattling the stumps and the other was aided by a Smith catch. John Mitchell (?-1) joined him at the other end and after a nervy start began to produce chances one of which an assured Spencer-Allen snaffled at long-on.

Shoreham now dug in with only two wickets in hand. Howe (?-0) came on for Mitchell and once his arm warmed in, managed to produce two difficult chances, both dropped. With seven overs now remaining, Smith returned for Young and Williams replaced Howe. Smith got his five-fer with a lunging caught and bowled to complete a fine contribution. Three overs later Williams spared Knockers blushes and boosted his tight figures by taking the off stump of the last man to complete a healthy victory for the travelling side.
