Match Report

Having suffered a year of abuse for fielding having won the toss, skipper Ben Cobb duly elected to bat against Linden Park. This despite being the opular choice was the wrong decision as Knockers started poorlylosing star batsmen Paul Seldon and Lynden Spencer Allen cheaply in the opening few overs. Geoff Smith battling hard in testing conditions was joined at the crease by Guy Howe, who took the attack to the bowlers, particularly South african Byron Wyngard as he was flayed 3 times to the leg side boundary. However a change of bowling saw a flurry of wickets as Howe was bowled for 21, and Smith (1) top edged to square leg. Tom Cobb (12) and James Mitchell (19) threatened to put a partnership together. mitchell playing his first Knockers game for 10 years mixing attack with stout defence in resisting the Park attack. Disaster struck however, when Tom Cobb's lack of intelligence, once again came to fruition as he attempted a quick single to Aussie Overseas and Knockers clark trophy winner Jayden Hoare, finding himself metres short and run out. Ben Cobb and Mitchell pushed the total along as Cobb tried to attck but when he was caught in the deep for 20 and Mitchell bowled soon after, Knockers saw the tail fail to wag and were duly dismissed for 92.

In response Kockers started well, Paul Cook snaffling a sharp chance at first slip off Matt Watts first ball. Wickets were needed to pressurise the park batting line up. However catches and edges didn't go to hand. Ed Marsh bowled with pace but little luck whilst Matt Watts toiled. Ben Cobb (3-26) came into the attack, joined by Guy Howe. Lynden Spencer Allen, now a specialist fielder, ran his heart out trying to prove he really was a Cambridge blue. For Park Matt Withers (45) and Tom Corner kept the scoreboard going throughout, with 92 never going to be enough. Knocker rallied with Cobb having Withers caught at gully before Corner caught at short leg. Howe also removed Morkel caught by Paul Seldon at mid on. Seldon reacted in disbelief and frustration yelling oh f**king hell" as the ball came to him, having dropped an identical chance a ball earlier. Despite the late rally, the second wicket partnership had done the damage and it was more for consolation. Billy whizz entered the attack for a ball but found himself duly dispatched for 4 and the game was won. Knockers falling short once again at Linden Park with a 5 wicket defeat.
