The annual Steve Trounce memorial match saw the Knockers win with only two balls to spare after The Old Oaks posted 149 and took a late flurry of wickets at the Vine. Guy Howe was the pick of the Knockers' bowling and Paul Seldon returned to hit the winning run having retired as opening batsman.
The Knockers fielded first, opening with Ben Cobb (22-0) and Andy Roberts (8-0). The Old Oaks openers, Tovey (24) and Page (10) saw them off and were particularly pleased to see the back of the miserly and testing Roberts. First change saw Howe (19-2) and Tom Sullivan (28-1) come on. Sullivan struck first ball when Page hit straight to Seldon at mid-off. Howe removed Tovey just shy of his retirement with Roberts taking the catch.
McMenemie (7) and Watson (26no) walked out only for Howe to tease the former into an attempted smash, bringing out a tidy running-catch from Seldon at mid-off. Watson attacked back and at his retirement the Oaks had something to build on. Second change introduced Seldon (26-1) and Nick Williams (36-0). Seldon got an early LBW decision as Ransom (5) returned to the pavilion. It was to be the last wicket of the innings. Jones (26no) hit several sixes over the near boundary before retiring. Stanyard (17) and Compton (6) took to Williams' bowling and the score finished on a respectable 149 from eighteen overs.
The Knockers' response started with Seldon (31no) and Landers (17). The Oaks' Dinnis (16-0) and Gibson (29-0) bowled with restraint but Seldon was batting freely, retiring on 30 with a six. Landers held up the other end, watching captain Tom Cobb (5) get bowled after first change by Jones (40-1), bringing James Mitchell (28no) to the crease. Landers fell to Compton (17-1) and then the combination of Mitchell and Ben Cobb (26no) improved the run rate dramatically. Both retired leaving the short-looking tail with seemingly little to do.
Something of a dramatic finish ensued as Roberts (3) ran himself out. Howe (13) was then bowled by Ransome (25-1), after which Pete Smith (6no), 48 years after his Knockers début, stepped into the fray. He promptly ran out Sullivan (1) but in the final over brought the scores level with a single. Williams (0) had four balls to win it but McMenemie (3-1) had him caught and bowled first ball. Paul Seldon then returned and won the game at the first time of asking as the Knockers finished on 150. With a mixture of skill from some and endeavour from others bringing a close result, Steve Trounce may well have approved of this good game of cricket.
