Match Report

A hairy winning draw for the Knockers as the Buccaneers turned a plodding run rate into a swashbuckling finish with just two runs between the sides.

Captain Tom Cobb was again unable to call upon eleven men and a gentlemen's agreement allowed the Knockers to bat first in the hope that further troops would arrive later. Paul Seldon (52) opened with Dan Turner (2). Turner fell caught after already being dropped bringing Tom Watts (53) to the crease. The pair put on a partnership of 49 as they slowly wringed runs out of a soggy track. Seldon fell first to a LBW having got his half century and a good start for his team.

Tom Cobb (2) was bowled but Andy Roberts (26) then drove the Knockers on with big hitting in another partnership of 49 with the assured Watts. Roberts was unlucky to be run out backing up as the bowler got fingers to a Watts drive. Paul Cook (12) watched Watts loop a pull shot to safe Buccaneer hands and Scott Landers (6no) joined him. Cook was bowled having attacked the few remaining overs leaving Edward Darry (11no) and Landers to run well to add a few runs to a stodgy score.

The visitors graciously loaned the Knockers a spare man as Matt Watts (26-0) opened the attack along with Roberts' (27-3) first spell. The pair's initial spell was tight and yielded two wickets for Roberts, the first was a smart catch by Seldon, the second an LBW. Watts faded after a great start and Turner (7-0) bowled three maidens from a sharp four over spell as Roberts eventually tired to let Freddie Young (35-0) in.

The Buccaneer's remaining opener, Stringer was by now finding his feet but the runs were hard to come by until Darry (32-1) forced his partner to find Seldon. This brought Rydon (72) into the fray and he threatened to turn the game on its head. The run rate trebled and not even the loss of two wickets slowed him down as Turner snaffled a Stringer chance from Cobb's (33-1) bowling who in turn took Seldon's return for a smart run out.

It fell to the returning Roberts to bowl the final over. Seven runs were needed. A single from the first ball took Rydon off strike. His partner was frustrated by two dot balls and was then nearly caught by Landers but the chance added two more runs. A further single meant the danger man needed three from the final ball but Rydon's big hitting couldn't best Robert's cool nerve and Young didn't waver as he waited for the last skied shot to land in his hands.
