Mayfield
229-7
Knockers
230-9
Knockers came out on top by 1 wicket in this hotly contested 40/0 against Mayfield CC. Paul Seldon smashed 104, his first 55 coming off just 13 balls. Captain Guthrie Miller claimed 3 wickets and hit the winning run.
Knockers lost the toss and were made to field. Rupert Harbig and Ed Marsh opened the bowling with some express pace and were unlucky not to get a wicket between them. Miller bought himself on and claimed the prized scalp of the opener on around 55. Freddie Young bowled well in his 8 over spell, getting one wicket (caught by Paul Cook) and bowling 15 dot balls in a row at one point. Miller finished his first spell with one wicket and introduced debutant Tim Robertson who was unlucky to not get a wicket after a hard chance was just missed by David Brigden. On came Brigden who made up for this error with a wonderfully economical spell of 3 overs, 13 runs and a wicket. Paul Cook was next, and he bowled a 2 overs. Miller bought himself back on and got another 2 wickets to cap off a fine bowling performance. Harbig and Marsh re-entered the attack and both claimed a wicket in the final overs. A good fielding display from Knockers limited Mayfield to 229-7.
Knockers were greeted at half-time by a delicious tea and the start of their innings was delayed by a rather important tennis match. This delay however, did not affect Paul Seldon, he cracked 13 fours and six 6's in his brilliant 104, the first 55 of which came off just 13 balls. An opening partnership of 130 set Knockers on their way to victory, Cook contributed 23 to this partnership and Seldon 104.In came Geoff Smith who played well for his 20 before being controversially given out by cookie. Robertson hit a solid 17 but fell in unfortunate circumstances. That didn't deter them however. Lynden Spencer-Allen came in and hit 1, with Harbig hitting two 4's before being out bowled. Marsh got a solid 5 and Miller played a determined innings of 14*. In came Brigden who was dancing up the wicket to their oversees player before he was bowled for a fine 1 run. Young came in with 14 needed and 2 wickets left. He hit his first two balls for 4 before being bowled and this ushered in late arrival Guy Howe, who nudged a ball for 4 to make the scores equal. Miller hit the ball to gully who, fortunately for Knockers, completely missed the ball to seal a fine victory for Knockers in what was a thrilling match.
Man of the Match - Paul Seldon
Special mention to Lynden Spencer-Allen for keeping wicket admirably.
