Match Report

This memorial game celebrates a man who both sides miss dearly. Like thoughts of the man himself, it was played gently, with enthusiasm, a little awkward at times and smiles-a-plenty. The Knockers won this 18 over match and then got on with the real business of raising a glass to Steve Trounce.

Captain Guy Howe elected to bowl first with Rupert Harbig and Will Smith. The Old Oaks got off to a solid start making the most of Harbig's early search for a line while Smith found his pace quickly but with no reward of a wicket. Turner took over from Harbig and kept it tight. Leading wicket-taker, Freddie Young, replaced Smith with James Mitchell then on at the pavilion end for Turner. After the Oaks opener retired, the pair teased out three wickets. Young turned the ball prodigiously with a looping catch at mid on by Paul Seldon being the highlight of his two wickets.

Howe brought himself on along with Scott Landers. Stuart Seldon backed his captain up with the gloves through two sharp stumpings. Landers was pleased to take his first Knockers wicket trapping his man LBW. Harbig then returned for the final over and claimed a seventh wicket as the Oaks set a target of 108 for the Knockers' defence of the trophy.

Richard Calver and Geoff Smith went out first for the chase. Calver fell early when his bails were clipped by a good ball. Smith looked in good form and with Harbig taking the game to the Oaks quickly the pair looked to build a solid platform until Smith was caught on 10. Man of the match, Freddie Young, was in imperious form with the bat as well as ball and as Harbig retired with a six, Young and the rapid scoring of Paul Seldon brought the target within reach. Young's cheeky scoop-shot deserves a special mention, particularly as he crouched down and waited a good four seconds to play it.

James Mitchell and Scott Landers replaced the retiring Seldon and Young respectively. Landers brought the score level and Mitchell made sure of matters with a boundary as the Knockers won with an over to spare.
