Match Report

It looked good. At 49-4 it looked very, very good. And then it didn't. A youthful Knockers side were undone by Pinchin's fine century and Trent's devastating five-fer in two overs as Bidborough won by 106 runs in this 40 over match.

Captain Freddie Young was put into the field following the toss, Richard Calver taking the gloves. Devin He (60-2), one of several debutants, opened the bowling and took a superb caught and bowled of Bidborough opener Trent (8). Then the unlikely sight of Edward Darry (46-4) bowling seam, although it was a full toss that brought about his second wicket as Tom Elliott held on superbly at square to remove Mitchell (2). Ted had earlier bowled opener Sergeant (5) and would quickly go on to claim Towner (1) in the same manner.

Young (41-0) took over from He and extracted good turn but no wickets. Sayem Ahmad (38-0) replaced Darry and posed questions to Bidborough's now settling partnership of Pinchin and D Hillhouse (34) but it wasn't until Hector Elliott (30-1) replaced him that Hillhouse fell to a second sharp c&b. Every ball had a certain sense of mystery about it from Hector, unlike Landers (20-0) who followed Charles Doubeday-Potts (22-0) after him with his tea trolley for one over - his six balls knew exactly where they were going and involved two replacements. Tom Elliot (11-0) and Ahmad tried from the other end but by the time a brutal 61 from Tillotson was ended by a returning Darry the Knockers were glancing nervously at the scoreboard.

Pinchin (129no) raced to his ton, regularly executing a cut to the short boundary with style and relish. Devin He returned to claim his second as Ahmad snaffled a skier at long-on. Paul Seldon (18-1) brought Bidborough down to their last man but two late drops of Pinchin later, Knockers had 286 to chase and a fine tea - homemade ginger cake being a particular highlight - to get them ready for it.

Seldon (12) looked good as he opened with Calver (10) with eight off the first. Then a calamitous attempt at a quick single saw Seldon trudge back to the pavilion. James Mitchell (46) steadied the ship with some aggressive batting and after Calver was bowled by Trent (2-0-6-5) Charles "the Duke" DDP (46) looked like helping him forge a handy partnership. Then it got ugly. Mitchell was bowled by Trent who then went on to take a hat-trick as Ahmad and then T. Elliott fell without troubling the scorer. H. Elliot avoided a golden duck but not the same score.

Landers (12) helped stop the rot but was grateful that Trent was finished. Another run out saw him replaced by Darry (16no) as the Duke played some lovely drives - one past cover that went through the open pavilion door being a particular highlight. He too fell, bowled. The skipper (24) then got runs quickly but the chase was not on with Devin He (6) falling after him with the Knockers ending over 100 short.

Man of the match CDDP - a fine innings from Guido's favourite plus a plethora of potential nicknames having been entered into the scorebook as "D of E.”
