Match Report

The Knockers were made to sweat for this win by three wickets as the Buccaneers took them down to the last ball chasing a moderate score. Edward Darry's battling 65 was the pick of the batting as Sayem Ahmad picked up his first Knockers wicket before taking three more.

Captain Stuart Seldon was put into field on a hot day, taking the gloves himself. Devin He (21-1) opened and took opener, Metcalfe, without scoring through a superb one-handed catch by Darry at gully who was at one point diving the other way. Richard Calver (28-1) came in at the other end, removing the remaining opener, Vic (12), bowled. So far, so good, but S. Leefe (34) and Chakravarti (34) then began to rebuild the Buccaneers' innings with Chakravarti taking a large slice of the partnership. Sachin Rawson (36-3) broke them up bowling Chakravarti and removed Hobson (3) with Paul Seldon taking another great one-handed catch with a dive at slip. Rawson followed up this good work with a smart return for a run out, Henderson for one run, and took his third wicket bowling Gordon (6). Freddie Young (20-0) completely tied down the other end going for two an over from his ten.

S. Leefe watched all this and at 68-6 his captain, Palmer (59) joined him in the middle. The Buccaneers' skipper took the game back to the Knockers with a boundary laiden knock as Leefe once again helped build a partnership until he was bowled for Sayem Ahmad's (31-4) first Knockers wicket. Ahmad would go on to bowl Gwynn (7) and Bryant (1) before claiming the prize wicket of Palmer catching a looping shot off his own bowling to leave G. Leefe (0) not out and the score at 157 looking gettable, despite a slow wicket and even slower outfield.

Stuart Seldon (2) began the response but was bowled early. Paul Cook (23) had opened with him and was batting confidently with several charges down the track while Darry (65) found his feet. Cook was out to a sharp catch from S. Leefe at mid-off and Calver (49) stepped in. It was hard going as the slow pitch and hot weather together with collectively smart bowling from the Buccaneers saw the run rate creep along despite some beefy Calver hits. His straightish six over long-on being the pick of the bunch. The partnership looked like wrapping things up until Calver was bowled one shy of a fifty by Gwynn who would quickly go on to trap Rawson (0) LBW and bowl Darry either side of Tom Elliott (0) getting bowled by the tight and troublesome bowling of G. Leefe (5-1). Young (0) also went bowled to Gwynn. Before he fell, Darry's early hard running had turned into hard hitting and two late classy sixes brought the run-rate back on track.

It was left to Paul Seldon (4no) and Sayem Ahmad (1no) to steer the Knockers home. Ahmad came out to face his first ball with two needed from three balls, clipping over mid-on for one to bring the scores level. Seldon then kept one out and gloriously (ahem) got the winning run with a leg-by as the Knockers tasted victory for the first time this season.

Man of the match: Joint between Ted's fine knock and Sayem's wicket haul.
