Match Report

Knockers sneak an all-out win in the last over of a thirty-over match against a battling Shoreham as the dark clouds of starting with eight men cleared up along with those in the sky. Richard Calver's fine 86 alongside Paul Seldon's 69 set up a great total as the Knockers shared the wickets around.

Captain Paul Cook won the toss and elected to bat in the hope some further recruits might appear as Shoreham themselves played with ten men. Paul Seldon (69) got into his stride early with two boundaries off the first over. Knockers loss was the corner shop's gain as Cookie (0) took his early dismissal out on the snack counter while the Duke (9) settled in. Doubleday-Potts didn't settle for long when he fell to a solid catch bringing Calver (86) to the crease.

The Seldon and Calver show then began. Seldon carrying on as he had started, hitting an almost disdainful 6 to bring up his fifty, hitting twenty four off the same over. Calver was the quieter partner as he waited until sure that the green wicket held no demons. Seldon was out "bored" according to Calver as Landers (25) stepped in following a catch just shy of a hundred partnership.

Landers chopped one off his ankles for four, joining Calver for the second solid partnership for the visitors. Calver took charge, clearing the ropes for his maiden Knockers fifty as the scoreboard ticked over healthily. With 200 nearly up and four overs remaining, Landers fell bowled as Seamus Connelly (8) brought his Swiss-cheese bat out for a few overs. Elliots Tom (2no) and Harry (1no) saw the eight men of Knockers through to the end of their thirty overs after Calver also fell, reaching 224.

The Duke had recruited his brother, William, who arrived in time for tea, but unlike certain Knockers that have arrived at a similar time in other matches, he would go on to do more than eat well. Harry Elliot (31-3) opened matters drawing a catch out of Seldon and producing a ball that did just about everything to nick the top of off stump for his second. Calver (23-0) found little in the track and Tom Elliot (21-1) replaced him and showed the grass wasn't needed as a full toss looped kindly to Connelly. Harry Elliot then bowled another as his pacey swing bowling troubled Shoreham.

Charles DDP (28-0) produced many near chances including a late edge that eluded Landers' debut with the gloves. Seamus Connelly (35-3) then ate into Shoreham's middle-order, bowling his first, watching the Duke roll over to snare his second and then immediately took his third, hitting the stumps again. His hattrick ball was seen off by Settenfield (20) who would go on to form a momentarily troubling partnership with the aggressive and by now fifty-runs-to-the-good batting of Rivett (86no). Guido (20-0) rolled up and bowled a few gooduns, though none of which found their way to the slip he demanded.

Cookie kept his cool while Rivett made hay, bringing back Harry Elliot and introducing William Doubleday-Potts (11-2). WDDP rapidly replaced his brother in the affections of their adopted father as Guido applauded his second-son's graceful bowling. The final over came, the score was safe and Will took two wickets in two balls to make things tidy. A great Knockers effort.

MOTM: Seldon and Calver share the honour for giving the youthful bowling attack plenty to defend.
