Sheldwich

Match Report

Knockers batted first and started slowly losing Paul Seldon early on. However, the arrival of Andrew Lamb at the crease saw an explosive innings of 47 that included 5 sixes and numerous other boundaries. Guthrie Miller (21) and Corin Spencer-Allen (26) were the only other notable contributors as Knockers' middle order offered little resistance, S Green taking 4-26 from 6 overs. However, Knockers reached a decent total of 216 thanks to the solid and vital innings of Paul Styles who carried his bat finishing on 64 not out. Despite Paul's contrasting style to the flashing stroke play of Lamb he proved that the old adage of the tortoise and the hare still holds true.

The Sheldwich innings was put in trouble early on by excellent opening spells by Paul Seldon (6-3-14) and Ed Irwin (6-2-32) both firing through the defenses to rearrange the stumps. As Sheldwich started to make some inroads into the Knockers total with the arrival of a pinch hitter at the crease it looked possible Sheldwich might recover from 22-4. A safe pair of hands in the Deep from Lamb saw Seldon pick up his third wicket and with the pinch hitter gone the stage was set for the 'ultimate weapon'. Guy Mauritz Howe (8-3-18), fueled by his vehement anger towards the so-called sub-species, came into the attack and destroyed the middle order with an excellent use of variation. Howe's dominance started with Paul Schofield brilliantly catching a bullet at deep mid wicket. At the other end Woody was producing a few balls Shane Warne would be proud of and finally picked up a deserved wicket when Ed Irwin clung on to a hand stinging catch at close range. An accurate throw from CSA and a sharp take from Martin Thomas led to a run out leaving Knockers with only one wicket required. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Guy Rufus Mauritz Excalibur Howe fired a quick one through the defenses of a barely adolescent boy to claim his third wicket and end the innings, Sheldwich all out for 106.

The performance in the field was one of the best I've seen by the Knockers. Good bowling backed up by enthusiastic fielding. Hopefully one of these days everyone can fulfil their potential with the bat, and when this happens Knockers will become formidable opponents to any side.
