(From Sevenoaks Chronicle, Aug 9th 1957)
Challenge Accepted
Weald 77 and 154; Knockers 124 and 64
Weald batted first in ideal conditions at Weald on Monday, but not progress very well against the accurate and hostile bowling of the visitors.
They were all out at lunch for 77, the scorers being Rev. Tribe (15), Apted (14), Lawrence (13). For Knockers R. Stanley took 6 for 35.
After lunch Knockers too the score along at a comfortable pace and after passing Weald's total went on to gain a first innings lead of 47 runs. Top scorers were D. Sim (22) and R. Saunders (26).
In Weald's second innings the accent was on quick scoring and in just over an hour 120 runs were hit. D Marchant (4) and W Apted (44 not out) set the pace and the innings closed at 154, Knockers were set to score 108 runs in an hour.
This challenge was accepted and in 20 mnutes 38 runs were scored for the loss of only one wicket. But then the game swung sharply and with only seven runs being scored five more wickets dell, and although the tail-enders defended well they could not stave off defeat and the last wicket fell at 64 with only five minutes' playing time left.
D Marchant was Weald's most succesful bowler taking 5 for 11, although credit must be given to some sharp fielding which led to two runs outs at the critical point of the innings.
