Bates and Hutton hit centuries
In fine weather on the Vine last week, Sevenoaks and District Wednesday, in their first match of the season, played a draw with Knockers in a high scoring game which saw two centuries.
The Wednesday batted first on a fast and true wicket and Dick Bates, pressed into opening bat, at once dominated the scene with a forceful and fast attack on all the bowling. He received very able support from Reg Vizard, and together these two hammered 124 runs before Vizard was was bowled by Miller.
Bates continued in devasting mood to race to a brilliant 121 - the first century of the season - before being dismissed by Challis. Eric Kemp continued the attack on the bowlers and Roy Nash was able to declare at 237, leaving Knockers plenty of time in which to reply.
Stubborn
Knockers innings was centred around Ned Hutton, and he did not fail them but the Wednesday bowlers were far too accurate for any assault necessary to reach the total. They fell well behind the clock, although young Keith Miller stubbornly for his 44 in support of Hutton, to deny any chance of victory for the home side. At the end Hutton had carried his bat for exactly 100 not out.
