Losing Draw :: Played on Sunday 16th May 2004
Knockers got their season started with an exciting match against Sissinghurst which ended in a draw. The team comprised of seven regular Knockers players with Eric Jarvis also playing to follow up his appearance in this fixture last year. The final three spots were taken up by new website recruit Scott Landers and two of his friends.
The Sissinghurst innings got off to a slow but steady start, with opening bowlers Lynden Spencer-Allen and the returning Dan Turner struggling to extract much life from the slow wicket. First and second change bowlers Guthrie Miller and Paul Seldon were similarly unsuccessful initially and the first wicket fell to a run out after some smart work from Spencer-Allen. Slow bowler Eric Jarvis though managed to change the game with three quick wickets, but Sissinghurst carried on fairly serenely to reach 183-6 at the tea interval.
Knockers innings got of to a disasterous start as both openers returned to the pavillion for a duck, and in fact the first run was scored by no4 Paul Seldon. With Scott Landers and then Guthrie Miller Knockers assumed some stability and looked to challenge the target. Miller looked in particularly good touch until being unfortunately run out for 27. Another flurry of wickets though left Seldon to bat with Spencer-Allen and this partnership proved fruitful until Seldon (67) was bowled looking to move the score on in the final overs. After this, the win was still possible going into the final over but Knockers had struggled to keep up with the run rate, particularly in light of the small number of wickets left in hand. Dan Turner however celebrated his return by plundering a couple of late boundaries to leave Knockers only four runs short at the close. Knockers now take on Shoreham, looking to avenge last years two defeats.
