Winning Draw for the Knockers
Knockers shaded a hard fought draw.
The batting proved solid and we posted a decent score. It was notable for the high proportion of sixes hit mainly off full tosses that were so slow it was really was a question of where they were to be despatched to.
Stuart Seldon, relieved of the captaincy and probably relieved about it, [following an incredible 100% failure rate in the hot seat this season] made a classy 51. The calming and some would say, but not me, large presence of Guthrie pulled the strings. Lyndon (32) and Guthrie (25) provided the main support. Andy Darry successfully batted for his average again. Harris picked up 4 for 22.
A notable event in itself was that that Coren Spencer-Allen turned out and if that was not enough, the man himself made a serious contribution in the field. In a champagne moment LSA induced an edge from the Park’s key batsman, the team simply relaxed as it flew towards second slip CSA- never was there a greater feeling of certainty but the ball mysteriously popped out of the clutching hands inducing a gentle expression of brotherly love from LSA – ‘why are you here?’ - probably audible Sevenoaks
The Cobb brothers, it must be said could not keep out of the act with Ben showing equal disregard for Tom’s bowling figures.
Linton Park (Rowan 31) never gained the momentum to seriously challenge but proved extremely obstinate and when chances were given the ball fell in the open spaces often a few feet from LSA. The bowling attack was blunted by the slow wicket. Only the guile of Andy Darry (3-13) threatened to unlock the oppo’s dour defence. Guthrie did, it is said, produce prodigious turn and swing in obtaining 2-20 but in an ultimately frustrating afternoon it was not enough.
