Knockers CC 60th Birthday match - Knockers Present vs Knockers Old Boys
On a beautiful day on the Vine, the current Knockers team pitted themselves against the guile of a Knockers ‘Old Boys’ XI. Experience triumphed in an excellent match.
Corin Spencer-Allen, skippering the Old Boys, won the toss and his bold decision to field instantly paid off when Ben Cobb dismissed Paul Cook and Sam Spink in the first over. Tom Watts then steadied the ship and started to assert himself fluently pulling and driving his way to a superb 103 n/o. Various other batters chipped in with useful runs, Lynden Spencer-Allen, 24, Stuart Seldon, 24, and Guthrie Miller (cap’t), 30, as the Old Boys found it increasingly tough to cover the wide spaces of the Vine in the afternoon heat. John Brigden took 1 wicket and Tom Cobb 2 wickets. Guy Howell picked up the prize wicket of Guthrie Miller with a fine catch by Scott Landers. A fair declaration was made at 207/7.
Following a leisurely and sumptuous tea (and later dinner) – many thanks Amanda Darry, Matt Watts took an early scalp of Richard Botting but then Paul Styles (20) and Tom Cobb (31) started to grind out runs against tight bowling especially from Ed Darry, with the Sevenoaks Town Band somewhat surreally playing in the background. The match turned the Old Boys way with the superb hitting of Ben Cobb (60) including an exceptionally massive 6, and classy stroke play of Martin Thomas (43). A late flurry of wickets (Dan Turner 3/54) backed up by superb catched by Ed and Lynden, helped put the game, briefly, in the balance but the calm heads and huge experience of Pete Smith and Ian Hitchcock saw the Old Boys home.
